Building Orion

Awhile back I attempted to make a 3D model of the Bid Dipper. I had limited success, as some of my stars were a little out of place. Not to be discouraged, I decided to try again with a different constellation: Orion.

Once again I made up a chart of the stars coordinates, then used my formulas to convert spherical coordinates into Cartesian coordinates. Follow that with a few measurements and some inventive mounting to get the stars into the third dimension and you have …

An Orion with several stars out of place … so much for Orion Mark I, back to the drawing board.

I went to my Starry Night software and looked up the stars in Orion. It turns out the software also gives the X, Y, Z coordinates for the stars along with the spherical coordinate. I jotted down the X, Y, Z numbers and set to work again with my ruler. The end result was …

Well it was Orion it all his 3D splendour! I am very pleased with the Orion Mark II model, but I have to confess my confusion and frustration about not being able to correctly convert my spherical coordinates. Well, third time is a charm I suppose, now which constellation should I tackle?
